A Helping Hand

Mental Health Awareness Production

About Hero

Overview

A Helping Hand was a community-led theatre production written by Rebecca Squared to raise awareness of mental health issues within the local community. Performed at The Old Courts in Wigan, the production aimed to spark conversation, encourage empathy, and reduce stigma around mental health with all proceeds donated to Mind Manchester.

My role was to create visual promotional materials that respectfully communicated the subject matter while remaining approachable and engaging to a broad audience.

Challenge

Mental health is a deeply personal and sensitive topic. The challenge was to design promotional artwork that conveyed emotional depth and seriousness without being overwhelming, distressing, or alienating. The visuals needed to reflect the tone of the production while encouraging attendance and community engagement.

Approach

The design approach focused on empathy, clarity, and emotional resonance.

  • Visual Tone: Subtle, considered imagery paired with restrained colour choices to reflect vulnerability and hope without sensationalising the subject.

  • Typography: Clear, legible type treatments that maintain accessibility while supporting the emotional weight of the content.

  • Composition: Balanced layouts designed to feel inviting rather than confrontational reinforcing the idea of support, connection, and openness.

  • Messaging: Emphasis on awareness, community, and compassion rather than crisis aligning with the production’s intention to start conversations.

The design was applied across promotional posters and supporting materials to ensure consistency leading up to the performance.

Outcome

The final visuals supported a successful community production that brought people together to engage with mental health awareness in a thoughtful and meaningful way. By aligning the design tone with the message of the play, the promotional materials helped create a safe and welcoming entry point for audiences while supporting a charitable cause.

This project demonstrates my ability to:

  • Design with empathy and social responsibility

  • Handle sensitive subject matter with care and restraint

  • Create promotional materials that support community engagement and awareness
